These are all my favorite boys and how much I love them let me count the ways.......

Some of this is discussion of their canonical characters, but some of it is also headcanon.

My favorite characters are always dumb sunshine boys, usually with lofty goals and an unhealthy dose of low self-esteem.

Characterization & story role: Typically the protagonist (or sometimes the protag's BFF), these boys are usually kind and earnest and extraverted. They're super upbeat and care a great deal about others, especially their friends. They want things to be fair and equal, and they are determined to do what's "right." That determination makes them incredibly serious, and even dangerous, when they confront their enemies, but their motivation is fairness and justice and a naive hopefulness. No matter how much they might want revenge, it is something they view as unconscionable.

They are often - or at least, appear to be - incredibly stupid. Sometimes, though, that class-clown behavior is a facade to hide a darker side, be that low self-esteem, a secretive purpose they cannot reveal, or outright self-loathing (or more than one to make a fun combination of secret angst). No matter their actual booksmarts, they're often incredibly emotionally intelligent in regards to other people, even despite their own flaws.

Physical appearance: They're typically broader and more muscular than their counterpart (though perhaps shorter), and they often have red or brown hair that is spiky and practically unmanageable, plus some kind of headgear a la goggles or a headband.

Sex & sexuality: They're fun and flirtatious, either by accident or purposefully so, and they're either canonically bisexual or I headcanon them as such. They are irrevocably horny with little self-restraint and willing to do whatever their partner wants. These are SERVICE TOPS - sweet and needy and, like a puppy, hopelessly devoted and absolutely desperate for attention. Occasionally, they are blatant manwhores, typically as a means of self-sabotage.

an angsty/emo twink

The characters I connect to most are the sad, angsty boys who have a traumatic past and are too pretty for their own good.

Characterization & story role: These boys are usually the secondary main character and the blue to the main character's red. While they don't function as the story's protagonist, they play an equally important role and are often more instrumental to the plot than the actual protagonist is. Sometimes, they start out as an enemy, but despite strong defenses built to keep others out, they are surprisingly easy to win over.

They are cool and calm, intelligent, and introverted. They struggle to connect with others and to make friends, and they often feel alone because of this. Underneath their cool exterior, they are desperate for friendship and love, but they don't know how to reach out or ask for help. Sometimes, they don't even know what real friendship and love is. That is often a trauma response - because boy have these boys been traumatized, usually via manipulation, grooming, abuse, or outright brainwashing - and they spend much of the story figuring out how to take part in a functional society, and how to love not only others, but themself.

Physical appearance: When I say these boys are twinks, I mean they are TWINKS. They are often petite, especially compared to other characters, and undeniably pretty. Their hair is usually a bob around shoulder-length with larger/longer sections on the front sides, and it is often muted in color, either a neutral or a pastel.

Sex & sexuality: These bitches gaaaaaay! It's never stated in canon, but their character arcs often follow the storyline of someone coming out of the closet (sometimes with literal closet scenes). Either they have never considered sex or they view it as something uninteresting, but once they start, they are addicted, both to the physical pleasure and to the inherent intimacy. They relish the blatant affection and adoration of their partner, even if they're too proud to admit it, some of them even mocking their partners for so openly stating their feelings. They can be controlling and slutty power bottoms, but only for their chosen partner.
